Jake Frasier - The Ocean as Wilderness

Several weeks ago in class we discussed how the ocean is similar to other wilderness and how it is different. In my opinion, I think that the ocean is much more of a wilderness than other, more common, areas. The ocean makes up over 70% of our planet's surface, making it the largest biome on Earth. In addition, it is extremely deep which allows for nature to flourish. Like we talked about in class, the ocean contains an air of mystery. The majority of the ocean is unexplored, so there is a great amount of wilderness to explore. In my opinion, the ocean is one of the most intimidating yet fascinating wildernesses on Earth. The places that have been previously explored are exciting and awe inspiring. Those areas unseen by man could be even more interesting. Think about the type of wildernesses experiences that one could have swimming around an undiscovered ocean. In addition, the ocean is just as much a wilderness on the surface as it is beneath. When on the beach, for example, I have great experiences while looking out at the ocean during sunset or sunrise. The sheer mystery and size of the ocean as a whole is what helps to create this experience. While the ocean may not be the typical wilderness, it is just as inspiring.
