Nate Thiel - Student's Choice 1

There is a saying at the Naval Academy about the months January through the beginning of March. They call it the “Dark Ages.” Meaning that, not only is it the darkest period of the yea, but it is also the time when no one seems to be in a good mood. I would have to say that this is true for the everyday person as well. Having attended two different colleges thus far, I can honestly attest to the fact that this pertains to everyone. Seeing the peoples’ faces around me during this time shows me that there is no happiness. I have a theory about why this is: it is the longest time of the school year between breaks. After approximately four or five weeks of school, everyone starts becoming gloomy and down in the dumps about school. It also does not help that the days are also the shortest, meaning that there is less sunshine during the short days. I have also found that when it is sunny, people are genuinely happier.
