Patrick Gordon-Outside Reading #2 Green Roofs

Global Warming: It’s a fact. The Ice is melting and weather is getting crazier and crazier every year; big cities are among the major contributors to this problem, and what have they done about it? Well, until I read an article about Chicago in the magazine Hemispheres I thought “Not too much” (and boy was I wrong). When I think of Chicago, I think of a sprawling industrial city; a city filled with smog and dirt. But , Chicago actually started it’s “Greening” legacy way back in 2000 when the City Hall was became a test project for the benefit of green roofs. What is a green roof you ask? Here you go.

“the 20,000 praire-style plants on the building’s rooftop garden have helped improve air quality, conserve energy, reduce storm water runoff, and cool the surrounding air”. Testing even showed a difference of 100 Degrees between a “green” roof and a black top roof! These roofs not only directly help the city environment, but they also indirectly help by lessing the demand for electricity. With such innovations as green roofs, we may have a chance of getting the environment back on the right track!
