Adam Hahn- Choice Entry: 3

This entry is based off questions raised after I gave a presentation on the problem of drugs coming across the Mexican American border. Recent violence has gotten a grip around Mexico endangering everyday citizens as well as those who are out to stop the rampant violence that is over taking the country. The violence south of the border is brought on by the need for drugs in the United States. With the Obama administration working closely with the Mexican authorities something must be done, quickly, to end the senseless violence and illicit activities that are creating problems for both nations. Millions has been spent on beefing up the police force, border security and intelligence received. One option in my opinion has been over looked that may solve this quickly and efficiently. What’s the best way to end the demand for these illegal drugs? Legalization. In this situation we are spending millions to fight a battle the government will never win. If legalized the cartel would no longer have a customer base. Millions could be earned in tax revenues; a whole industry could be developed providing jobs. The social ramifications may breed a generation of addicts, although this does not have to be the case. If carefully regulated the benefits could blow the negative aspects out of the water. Overcrowding in jails would be relived, dollars spent on probations and tests for getting caught could be saved. Health risks are not nearly as devastating as those associated with alcoholism and addiction to cigarettes. While the government must act in the best interest of the citizens it seems that by demonizing an entire market they are causing more trouble than they are alleviating. America has been losing the war on drugs since 1969; it seems as though its time to reconsider the plan of attack.
