Jason Meulman Landscapes of the Sacred Part 3
The american tension between space and place. Space refers to freedom while place refers to security and stability. There are two characteristics of space. One is freedom, an example is the wide-open spaces of the american frontier. The other characteristic is threat, which is the fear of getting lost in space. Place also has two characteristics. The first is comfort and the example that was given is a small town in which you know everyone and live peacefully. The other characteristic of place is constriction which would be a revolt against the village.
