Jake Frasier - Passover
Last week during class, we had a lesson on Passover. Passover is a holiday commemorating the Hebrews escape from Egypt. During class, we learned about all of the symbolism behind the Satyr Meal. I thought it was really fascinating how those who celebrate Passover pay respect to the past. For example, the 5 foods eaten at Passover which remind you of the Israelites' struggles. While each food has its own symbolism, there are certain rituals associated with some of the food. The matza, for example, is broken into 3 pieces which symbolize Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Also, the heroseth's contents represent the 4 trials of the Exodus. We learned that passover represents a personal journey and it engages all of the senses. We also discussed how the title of the holiday was derived. If lamb's blood was smeared on the door frame then the angel of death would "pass over" the house and not kill their first born. Overall, the lesson we had on Passover gave me a lot of insight into how much symbolism there is in religious ceremonies/practices.
