Adam Kimmel - Topic Of My Choice : Defining Religion Lecture

During one of the lectures we were asked how we define religion. To me religion is something that brings together many different types of people. It connects them to a higher power through practice, beliefs, and ritual. Religion effects the way a individual lives out their life by giving them codes to live by. These codes are often referred to as morals and are given to us in sacred writings. In class we came up with three things that all religions have...

1.Religion is humanities relationship with a transcendent and ultimate authority/power.
2.A System of values, ideas, and practices which provide a culture with a cosmos, an ordered reality.
3.In conjunction with parts one and two, it is the practice of maintaining the cosmos.

Knowing what what religions have in common helps me to understand why people believe in these myths. These myths are what gives us as a people a reality. Without religion many people would be lost in this world where we cannot know all the answers. Religion helps people cope with this ever testing life that we all live. It is a shinning beacon in times of great distress.
