Ryan McGovern, Music as Sacred Place 5-1-09 (topic of own choosing)
So I was thinking about how the internet can be conceived of as a sacred place, and it got me thinking about other forms of media that could be considered sacred place. The one that I came up with is music. Music has the ability to transport you to a different time and place separate from the one that you are physically in. It can take you to a higher plane of existence, wholly separate from the physical world. While on the surface music is just noise, the instruments, vocals, message of the lyrics, all of that has the ability to change your current perception of reality. Music has been around since the beginning of time, and it is not something that necessarily requires high technology to do. So one could say that it can take you back to a primal place, a place before mp3's and iPods. Because of this ability to transport you back in time, I believe that it is sacred. The musicians themselves may also be imbued with some sort of mystic power. It seems like they can "hear" the world, different than normal people can. For this reason the holy seems to be present in music. It not only can transport you back in time, but it can also be a sacred place for you. Whatever is going on around you can become insignificant, and you go to your own sacred place when your favorite music is playing. If in the right state of mind, you can let it take you there.
