Jacquelyn Powell - Viewing Nature Interactively
After the class visit to the Lion’s Gate Bridge, I realized that there really is a different way to look at things as simple as a walk along the Noland Trail. As cheesy as it sounds, it was really cool how Professor Redick pointed out the different textures in bark, because, who really looks at those things? It’s almost like a fingerprint that distinguishes individuals. Another thing I found interesting was when he pointed out the May-apple leaves that had the spots on them. If he hadn’t taken the time to show me that the spots on the leaves were pollen then I would have never known the difference. Something so small as spots on leaves going unnoticed makes me wonder what else I miss out on by just walking by and not truly taking notice of what’s around me. Just like another entry of mine, I talked about my roommate and I standing on the bridge and just taking everything in. I need to do that more often. Or when I’m in the car, just take notice of the clouds and things like that. I’m sure it will make things much more worth living for if I actually started appreciating my surroundings a little bit more.
