After reading "Into the Wild", I started to think about how it would be to live a life as a traveler, just going from one place to another. It would be lonely. I don't like being alone because I think about things and analyze them too much. I suppose I would feel purposeless. Or maybe that's why the young man did it in the first place. Maybe, he didn't feel like there was a point to his life, and he wanted to figure out what it was. I'm not sure how you would figure that out when each day you are just trying to survive on the landscape.
I think that being out in the wild for short periods of time, either by yourself or with a few friends, can be very beneficial. It is a good time for reflection. However, to just wander around all the time and not actually do anything with yourself seems like a waste of time to me. Perhaps, it more rebellion against his parents or 'societal code' than anything else. I know that he had some very good experiences, but I feel like his overall attitude was very apathetic. Like he didn't really care about what was going on outside of himself.
