Chrissy Jackson: Outside Reading 2

Recently, I finished reading "Wild at Heart" by John Elderidge. It talked a lot about how society, and especially the Church, has squelshed the true desires of a man's heart. In a less nice sounding manner, we have womanized men and tried to make them spineless. This is not what God had intended for them. He made Adam in the wilderness. He wanted Adam to be a warrior, a fighter, a hunter, a protecter. Adam was a picture of strength, exactly what a man should be.

And yet, society makes hunting and fishing and hiking sound backwoodsish and uncouth. It is dirty and stupid to spend time outside in the middle of nowhere. But, isn't this where most men secretly wish they could be? It's because they were made that way. They weren't meant to sit behind a desk all day and remain motionless, day after day after day.

Society says that these well-dressed, well-mannered men are 'gentlemen'. Yes, manners are important. But the idea of wanting 'nice' guys is another way of wanting a wimpy one. They want men to be soft-spoken, not easily angered, and docile. Men were not made to sit back and watch; they were made to DO.
