Chad Adams - Outside Reading: The Metamorphosis

While reading the first few pages of the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, I can't help but put myself in Gregor Samson's position. The story is about how the main character, Gregor Samson, turns into a bug over night and how himself and his family cope with the drastic change. The thing I like most about the book is that there can are hundreds of ways to analyze, interpret, and understand this book. Even the bug that Gregor turns into is up to the reader's imagination. Although it's usually interpreted as a giant cockroach, Kafka never really paints a clear picture which adds to the book. Overall I didn't love the book, but It was a good easy read that kept my attention for most of it. I thought it was interesting how many analytical readers thought the book related to Kafka's faulty relationship with his father. My parents divorced when I was two years old, and now my biological father lives in Colorado. It's easy to see how much your family life and parents affect everything about your life. I think the theory that this book had some thing to do with the relationship between Kafka and his father makes perfect sense, and there are points to prove it. But there also points to prove hundreds of theories, and this is probably why the book is so puzzling and is still read and taught in the educational environment.
