Adam Kimmel – Outside Reading : Henry David Thoreau

A Quote from the chapter “The Ponds” in Walden...

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature.
It is Earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures
the depth of his own nature.

I think this has some great meaning and makes me think about how we precieve things. A lake is truly a majestic part of any wilderness and not only does it bring its own type of beauty, but also reflects all that of which is around it. I think that is what this quote is saying we can judge how we are as a culture by looking at the reflection that we have. Are all lakes surrounded by buildings, traffic, and pollution or do we have places that are left untouched for us to enjoy? That is how we can judge our own nature and see what we are doing wrong and right.
