Tyler Million - Outside reading #3
The final book I read outside of class this semester is Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. While the book does not directly deal with the wilderness or sacred space; I believe it deals with a form of wilderness I found myself lost in several times, wilderness of the mind. The narrator is so lost in his life that he creates an alter ego, Tyler Durden, who is everything he wants to be. Tyler creates this grand plan to restart civilization in order to make the human race right again. In the book Tyler has many monologues about losing everything in order to be free, and a common theme among these is God’s view of man. It is Tyler’s belief that man has become god’s unwanted children, and we must prove to him we are worthy of his love. This is the way I feel a lot of hikers and climbers think. When people go out into the wilderness challenging themselves while searching for god it seems to me they are trying to prove themselves worthy of his attention.
