Ryan McGovern-Making Nature Sacred, YES! in thunder. 5-1-09
In Making Nature Sacred, Gatta talks about finding God in thunder. He quotes Jonathan Edwards when he writes; “felt God at the first appearance of a thunder storm. And used to take the opportunity at such times, to fix myself to view the clouds, and see the lightnings play, and hear the majestic and awful voice of God’s thunder: which oftentimes was exceedingly entertaining, leading me to sweet contemplations of my great and glorious God” (Making Nature Sacred, 61). Thunderstorms have long been a spiritual experience for myself. Ever since I was young, I have sat and watched storms roll in on my front porch. It feels like a cleansing experience, watching the world wash itself. The sound of thunder has always been a great announcement of the coming storm, almost warning people to go inside and seek shelter. One could say its God’s way of announcing himself. Also after a thunderstorm, things always seem greener outside, almost if life had started over again. That plays on the theme of a cyclical existence, that nothing ever really ends, it just gets reinvented.
