Kim Robinson - Assigned reading # 1

"Mountains and rocks make up it's backbone and flesh, water the blood running through its veins, trees and grass its hair, and clouds tge breath of its inner life." - The Mountain that was God Landscapes of the Scared page 96.

I had never thought of comparing a mountain to a living being until I read this quote. I use to think of mountains as a big pile of rocks. Yes they had some inevitable force that attracted people to them but I never looked deeper into why. After reading this quote it makes sense. Mountains can be compared to a living thing. This quote makes sense to me now because I can see how the water flowing down them can be like the blood that keeps them alive. Mountains have a certain personality, a personality that varies from one mountain to the other. A low lying mountain like those along parts of the AT that are covered with fresh wild flowers inviting people to hike then and have moderate tempers to those like Everest or K2 where people die every year in great numbers. It's like comparing a child to a full grown convict. Those mountains that take people's life warn humans to stay off them but they still try to conquer this larger than life force. I never would have thought to think of mountains this way until I read that quote.
