Katelyn Almeda: Personal Experience-Cherrystone

The second axion that Lane asserts is that "sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary (Lane, 19)." Once a year, my family and I travel to the Eastern Shore to go camping at a family campground called Cherrystone. We always go during the month of October, when the halloween celebrations are happening. While there, we have many "rituals" that we participate in. For example, we adorn our campsite with Halloween decorations as soon as we arrive. We also go out on the paddle boats on the lake there and we build a huge campfire where we all sit around and talk. There is also a haunted House that the staff there puts up every year. As a family, we hold hands and go through the house together on night while we are there.
To someone who has never been to Cherrystone, they might just see it as a regular, boring campground. However, to me and my family, it is so much more than that. Some of my fondest memories have come from this place and it is very significant to me and my life. This clearly depicts Lanes second axiom because my family chooses to make Cherrystone extraordinary through the "rituals" that we take part in there.
