Katelyn Almeda: Jesus in Disneyland

During one of our class discussions we talked about how Disneyland could be seen as a sacred place. I decided to google this idea and I ended up finding a book that was very thought provoking. It is titled Jesus in Disneyland and is written by David Lyon. Lyon discusses the relationship between religion and postmodernity and talks about how some Disney characters are more well known than many biblical characters. As sad as this is, it is very true. We are surrounded by the media every day. These perfect Disney images are constantly pumped into our brains. Many children see Disneyland basically as their own heaven and care more about going there than they care about going to church.
In class we discussed how even the architecture of Disneyland was made to create a sacred experience for those who come to visit. When you are in the park, you cannot see anything from the “outside world”. You are consumed within Walt Disney’s imagination. Also, everyone who works ar the park is expected to be perfect. They must follow certain scripts and be happy all the time. The predictability is what keeps people coming back year after year.
