John Weatherford- Student Topic

A place that I hold to be sacred is the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. I visited the memorial just after is opened with my grandfather who fought in the war. When I walked around and saw the 56 pillars, one for all the states and territories at the time of the war. I could tell that my grandfather had a connection with the place, that it brought back memories of the war. I also saw other World War II Veterans walking around the memorial and this just enhanced the sacredness of the place. I felt a special connection to the pillar for Virginia, because I was there. The most spiritual part of the memorial was when I saw the Freedom Wall, which has gold stars for representing Americans who died in the war. They were ordinary gold stars but they had so much more meaning to them. The National World War II Memorial is one of the few places I hold to be sacred.
