In chapter 9 of Making Nature Sacred, Gatta discusses Wendell Berry and his writings. Gatta notes, “Berry has, after all, denounced institutional Christianity for failing to preach or to practice environmental healing (201).” I completely agree with this. I feel that many Christians preach that they should do no harm, but then they also believe that humans can do whatever they want because they are the smartest species and are at the top of the food chain.
"..God said unto them....have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.'"(Genesis 1: 28,29)
I personally feel that Christians are a lot less environmentally conscious than those who follow many other religions. Although nature does play a large role within the Bible, they do not preach environmental respect like many other religions do. I find this upsetting and I hope that one day more environmentally friendly Christian groups will arise.
