Secret Gardens – Women’s Plot, Women’s Work
This article is absolutely ridiculous to me. I understand it is written about the Victorian era, but I cannot even imagine living in a time where gardening is the only time women get out into “nature” and go outdoors. It is also crazy to me how it talks about providing fruits and vegetables from the garden was a woman’s way of contributing to the family. Don’t you think they have done enough by keeping up with the house, the children, and everything else? I also think it somewhat strange that the article mentions how some people would use the gardens as a sort of pseudo-sacred place because I suppose they had nowhere else to go. I don’t think I could handle living in a time period like that with the personality and beliefs I have now. I am such an individual and have nontraditional beliefs that I just couldn’t do it. I would hate to be suppressed and stuck in a house and the only time I went outside was to go somewhere or garden because that is what is expected of me. I just can’t stand to even think about that lifestyle!
