Jacquelyn Powell - Landscapes 2

“Landscape is first of all an effort of the imagination… Landscape is always an expectation which is brought to the environment, an interpretative lens placed over an otherwise dull, placeless void.” P131
I am not sure I totally agree with this quote. I can see how maybe a landscape is partly imagination, but I think that it is more in the context of what you take notice of and what you appreciate. It all depends on how you look at it which seems like that’s what the interpretative lens part is getting at. The other day I was walking down the sidewalk and there was a tree with a branch hanging over me. I happened to glance up and noticed that the tree was blossoming these amazing white flowers. The people I was with didn’t seem to notice, and once I pointed this out, they didn’t really care. But I thought that they were pretty and I appreciated the moment. Another example of this was yesterday, I was in a bad mood, and I was in the car with some friends. I was zoning out watching cars go by when my friend pointed out to me the huge rainbow that was beside me arching over some water. It was gorgeous. Even sunsets and sunrises can be looked at using this perspective of an interpretative lens. Some people couldn’t care less, whereas I love and enjoy looking at them. I don’t think though that landscapes are just efforts of the imagination. Nature, and scenes such as mountain ranges, water falls, fields, anything can be beautiful, meaningful, or whatever you want it to be without using your imagination. Nature makes the most beautiful things on its own, its just up to you to notice them.
