Chad Adams - Making Nature Sacred: Snow Leopard

Reading the 'Seeking the Unseen Snow Leopard' section of Gatta's chapter 8 got me thinking. The line "In captivity, deprived of dignity, it strikes observers as a sadly diminished creature" specifically hit me kind of hard. I've been to the zoo a few good times and when I see these amazing creatures that I probably wouldn't have the ability to see If the zoo wasn't there, the first thing I usually think about is how amazing these creatures are, instead of how they should be in the wild. After getting over the awe of these animals, I frequentlyt think the thought that these animals deserve to live where they belong like Gatta says. This thought especially crosses my mind when an animal looks sad or broken down. Gatta's next line, 'so do the human beings - presuming they can never find a real homeplace amide modern civilization also interested me and got my thoughts going. This is a different outlook than mine, because i believe that the sense of home is crucial to a person's identity and feelings. I would consider my house in Northern Virginia, where my family lives, a home, but it's interesting to think that what has been my home for so long can easily change. And my old home can become the home for some one else.
