Lindsey Pritchett - Nature as a mask of the Holy
In the text, Landscapes of the Sacred, the ordinary is seen to mask the holy by revealing something about the sacred as well as concealing it. Nature serves as a mask of the holy in that it reveals the wonders of the world that which God is believed to have created. Nature also serves to conceal the holy by not revealing it its true form. Nature shows humans how beautiful the world is as well as how scary it can be. If it is believed that God created nature, as well as humans, nature can serve to reveal something about humans as well. However, Nature hides the answers that we most long for. Questions such as why are we here and where exactly did we come from... these cannot be proven. Humans are only capable of theorising about our origins. However, Nature reveals certain aspects of our existance that are exhumed by archaeologists and historians; people spend their lives extorting whatever information they can get about our existance from nature.
