Lane writes on page 19, "The first axiom is that sacred place is not chosen, it chooses." This means that we cannot find a place in nature and call it sacred just because we want it to be sacred. Rather, when we have an epiphany or religious realization in the wilderness, it is then that a place becomes sacred. We cannot make it sacred. Instead, the sacredness is contained within the place, waiting to be let loose.
Also, the second axiom Lane writes is, "Sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary." What this means is we can be in a commonplace setting and, because of the experience/realization we have in this setting, the place becomes sacred. Sacred place does not have to be in the most serene or beautiful landscapes. It can be just about anywhere a realization occurs.
