Colleen Cook Ch.1 sacred places
In Landscapes of the Sacred we read about how and why places are sacred. There were four axioms discussed. They were 1.Sacred places are not chosen, they choose. To me this means you should always have an open imagination and to expect the unexpected. 2.Sacred place is ordinary, until a ritual makes it extraordinary. My friend told me something that fits into this category. She met her boyfriend at a Festival in Williamsburg and now whenever she returns it's very special because she remembers how she her boyfriend there. 3.Sacred places can be tred upon without being entered. I think even looking at something can have an effect on someone. Whether it be a place or a painting or something, it can have meanings for everyone. 4. The impulse of sacred places are both centripetal & centrifugal and local & universal. Sacred places can be anywhere around the world and I think it's important to realize this. They can be anywhere and appear to you at anytime. I've found places that are special to me by some of these axioms. One place that has become special to me and my sister is the 7-11 by our house. It probably sounds dumb, but her and I have a crazy obsession for Slurpees that it has become a ritual to always walk to the 7-11 and get one, almost everyday I am home during the summer!
