Brendan McElroy - #2 Making Nature Sacred

“This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God…[and] read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life.” (Pg. 111)
Walt Whitman has a very interesting opinion on life and what is in there. It seems as if he has some Christian background in that he speaks on loving on everyone and everything, and giving to those in need. But they he states that we should argue against the existence of God. It is interesting to see how in the first sentence of what he says, he is talking about love, and loving everything. However, not even before that sentence is finished, he says how we should hate tyrants. The thought I have is how can one love everything but still hate. Is that not a complete contradiction of oneself? It was interesting to read what Whitman had to say and learn how he viewed “his” world and God.
