"An image I have from childhood is of a group of men and women praying somewhere in the desert. The reason chronically myopic and selfish people have not destroyed us with nuclear weapons is that, in a rarefied and metaphorical way, there have been these enclaves of monastics praying. What keeps these things from exploding, perhaps, is that each of us in his own way is saying his prayers."
This educative quote citing the proclamations of Barry Lopez on page 187 of "Making Nature Sacred" definitely provides an interesting perspective on religion as it functions in modern society. I personally feel as if this suggestion offers a prime example of how many philosophy and spirituality-based authors desire for the population to function. These figures often emphasize the importance of individual connection to nature and the integration of religion into these conjunctions. This quote exemplifies how crucial diversity in religion is among the world's cultures. It is certainly an interesting thought to contemplate how current events would play out in the absence of these varying spiritual journeys that so many feel compelled to partake in.
