Katelyn Almeda: Lane 3

In chapter 6 of Landscapes of the Sacred, Lane talks about Shaker theology. He discusses how people who follow this theory believe that there are basically two realms on Earth. Lane states that they "would always be concerned to join visionary place to material place, the heavenly place to the most tangible, earthly realm, the world of angels to the world of well-turned table legs (Lane, 161)." I found this to be especially fascinating and very deep to think about. Basically, there is a spiritual world that we cannot see as well as the physical world that we live in. These two worlds coexist, but we cannot comprehend the spiritual world fully because we are blind to it. Heaven and Earth work together and as Shakers describe it are "threads of one loom (162)."
When people say that they see angels, ghosts, and other visions, they are actually seeing parts of the spiritual world that are happening at the same exact time and place as the world that we live in. As much as this creeps me out, I believe in what Shaker theology says and find it very captivating to read about.
