"Yet true virtue, according to Edwards, yearns to embrace nothing less than the well-being of everythine that is. It expands the sphere of ethical responsibility outward, beyond the first circle of neighbor and kin all the way to a "benevolence to Being in general." (Chapter 3, p. 67, para. 1)
It's hard for me to distinguish between virtue and integrity most of the time. It's more than just being a good person and doing what is right. It's more than loving the stranger next to you. So what is it? Human beings cannot give true love. We can experience it because of what Christ did on the cross. We know it is real because God IS love. The love that we give and receive to and from other people is not the same love that God has. His is perfect love. I used to wonder, if it is impossible for us to love the way He does, than why does He tell us to? Why even bother?
But why not? It doesn't take much to show love to another person, whether it be a kind action or an encouraging word. It's not about us anyway. The only way people love each other is by allowing ourselves to be vessels through which God works. The only way we gan give love is by letting Him give through us. It is not a perfect love because we are an imperfect people. However, we can still impart little peices of God to others by living for Him. Only with God eyes can we truly see things for what they were meant to be. Only then can we experience selfless love.
