"...sacred place is not chosen, it chooses... sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary... sacred place can be tred upon without being entered... the impulse of sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal, local and universal." (Chapter 1, pg. 19, para. 2,3,4,5)
These are the four axioms of sacred place as described by Lane. I like the idea that one place might mean the worls to somebody, and yet it might seem completely ordinary to another. It's all about the experiences that you have had there or perhaps your cultural background with the place. There are shrines, or cathedrals, or cities that are sacred to one specific group of people, and, while others come to visit these sacred sites, they may not experience any kind of spiritual or emotional bond with the place.
Everyone's experiences are different. No one can make themselves feel something when they don't. This goes into the idea the the place choses the individual and not the other way around. It's like God working through to touch an individual, but He doesn't do it the same way twice. He has something different planned for each individual.
